President Higgins in China

President Michael D Higgins, the official patron of Ireland’s celebration of WB Yeats, officially launched Yeats2015 on the world stage when he brought a translation of Sailing to Byzantium with him to China when he met the Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The event took place in Shanghai on December 11 at 2 pm, as part of President Higgins’ state visit to China. The translation was completed by young Chinese poet and scholar Huiyi Bao, translator in residence with the Ireland Literature Exchange and Trinity College Dublin.

Ms. Bao is the author of several books and will complete a translation of Yeats’ poems next year.

The President personally presented a framed copy of Sailing to Byzantium to the VIP guest Mr Pu Durong, a writer who has previously published work on the poet.
