Druid Shakespeare at The Hawkswell

June 9, 2015 @ 7:30 pm - June 13, 2015 @ 2:00 pm

An epic story of war, family and the making of nations. Druid Shakespeare is the story of three men who would be king. It spans decades, chronicles rebellion, breeds armies and witnesses the rise and fall of great men and those who dare oppose them.

Mark O’Rowe’s adaptation preserves the chronology and condenses Richard II, Henry IV (Pts 1 and 2) and Henry V, into one thrilling drama played out over six hours.

Richard, who has been king since he was eleven, is forced to relinquish the crown to his cousin Henry Bollingbroke. Can a man who has been king all his life become just a man? When Bollingbroke is crowned king his throne is threatened while his son Hal drinks and whores with a band of ne’er-do-goods. Hal’s approach to the throne is to ‘busy giddy minds with foreign quarrels’ but will such a political manoeuvre unite or divide the nation?

This is Shakespeare performed at its best with an exceptional cast, inventive staging, thrilling drama and a rousing parade of characters including one of Shakespeare’s most hilarious comic creations, Falstaff.

Please note: the performance is 6 hours in length.

The performance runs over two days on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Tuesday night ticket covers entry for Tuesday and Wednesday nights only.

Alternatively, you can see the performance in its entirety on Friday and again on Saturday including two intervals and a lunch break.

Druid was the very first company to grace the Hawk’s Well Theatre stage and has since returned many times. On this, their 40th birthday we are delighted and honoured to host an epic new production from one of the world’s great theatre ensembles this summer on. DruidShakespeare will see Tony Award–winning director Garry Hynes and an astonishing ensemble of actors bring a 17-year span in English history to life. Mark O’Rowe’s distillation of Shakespeare’s tetralogy into a single, continuous narrative explores the nature of leadership and honour while telling a key story in the making of the English nation – including the ruthless suppression and appropriation of the land, language, and people of Ireland. In this unmissable cycle expect suspense, thrills, history brought to life and most importantly, expect the unexpected!
