Harp Festival of Moons (July – The Calm Moon)
Venue: Glencolmcille Folk Village, Donegal
On the 7th full moon of the year, the Glencolmcille Folk Village, Co. Donegal will host a recital by Eileen McDevitt and friends. The village was home to the visionary priest Fr. McDywer who in the mid 80s started a summer school for Irish harp there. This contributed in no small way to the revival of the instrument in the area and elsewhere in the northwest as well as in Ulster. The folk village, is the perfect backdrop for the folk tales and fairy stories so central to the Yeatsian legacy; it was in kitchens such as this one in the village that these stories were told and retold through generations.
St. Columba’s Church, in Drumcliffe where Yeats lies buried, takes its name from the same 6th century saint Colmcille after whom the village of Glencolmcille is named.
The July Harp Festival of Moons will be a mix of poetry, song, music and spontaniety in Gaelic and in English, contributed by locals and visitors to the area alike in the kitchen of one of the traditional cottages in the village. Expect a warm Donegal welcome, and feel free to join in!
