“In the Deep Heart’s Core: A Mystic Cabaret”
From the Works of W. B. Yeats
At once a poet’s autobiography, a theatrical song cycle, and a journey through the romantic imagination and the national soul of Ireland, “In the Deep Heart’s Core” follows the life of the Celtic visionary poet and activist William Butler Yeats, moving through dreams and heartbreaks toward ultimate spiritual triumph. “In the Deep Heart’s Core” opened in 1994 at Chicago’s Bailiwick Repertory Theatre to unanimous critical acclaim, receiving a 1995 Jeff Citation for Outstanding Original Music, and was featured at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D. C., a four-week run at Virginia’s nationally-known Barter Theatre, a four-week run at Philadelphia’s Movement Theatre International, and a national tour.
Originally produced with a cast of six singers, actors, and musicians, these duo performances of “In the Deep Heart’s Core” for the celebration of Yeats2015 are the debut of the work in Ireland–its source and inspiration. We would like to thank the directors and staff of Thoor Ballylee Visitors’ Centre, as well as The Grain Store at Ballymaloe The Model Arts Centre in Sligo, and Liz Weir and the Cushendall Golf Club, for their generous support and hospitality.
All song lyrics and spoken texts in the show are drawn directly from W. B. Yeats’s Collected Poems, as well as his Autobiographies, Memoir, essays and letters, and are used by permission of the Yeats estate, A. P. Watt, Ltd.
