Of This Place – contemporary visual reflections from Yeats Country
As part of Yeats 2015’s year long programme of events celebrating the life and legacy of William Butler Yeats, eight Sligo-based visual artists focus on their own creative relationship with the same landscape that so inspired Yeats.
Contemporary visual reflections from Yeats Country this special exhibition features the work of Nuala Clarke, Conor Gallagher, Cormac O’Leary, Kate Mac Donagh, Brian Mc Donagh, Leonora Neary, Bettina Seitz & Michael Wann.
Acknowledging the wealth of inspiration afforded to W.B. Yeats by the landscape of County Sligo, each member of this collective of eight Sligo-based artists individually explores the nature of the relationship between their own work and these same environs. The exhibition makes for an interesting exploration of the many planes of landscape, from the geographical to the emotional to the metaphysical. The group bring together their own findings to mark a collective appreciation of these many geographies, presenting a homage of sorts to the landscape of Sligo.
With each artist’s experience as individual as their own practice, this body of work is a visual meditation upon the manifold ways that their surrounding landscape is absorbed, seeping into their creative consciousness. Writer Brian Leyden has liaised with the artists, stimulating a dialogue and locating the work in its imaginative terrain for the exhibition’s accompanying catalogue.
An exhibition of two parts, Yeats Society Madrid host the first show at El Ateneo, Madrid, and in July, the group’s second exhibition opens in the Hamilton Gallery, Sligo.
Writer Brian Leyden has interacted with the artists during the course of their work and has written a foreword for the exhibition’s accompanying catalogue.
