Visualising the West – National Gallery of Ireland

February 28, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 1:30 pm

Visualising the West

Running from 10am to 1.30pm, this event will feature talks and panel discussions exploring the West of Ireland’s enduring attraction for artists.

It will include a special series of poetry readings by actor Denis Conway to mark 150 years since the birth of WB Yeats (1865-1939).

Visualising the West
The West of Ireland’s enduring attraction for artists is partly due to the fact that traditional customs and ways of life were visible there long after they had disappeared elsewhere. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries many Irish and visiting artists traveled to the West of Ireland to immerse themselves in the unspoiled landscape inhabited by people who spoke Irish, wore their own style of clothing and lived off the land and the sea.

The exploration of concepts of national identity, of what is unique about the West, and what constitutes the ‘Irishness’ of the landscape, continued in the twenty-first century, involving artists in a broader range of media including, painting, sculpture, photography, installation, video, digital media and film. These responses reflect an on-going interest in ideas and concepts for ‘imagining’ the West – a place that forms such an enduring source of inspiration.
