Qatar University students translate “Aedh wishes for the Cloths of Heaven”

Dr. Anastasia Remoundou-Howley is an Assistant Professor of English Literature at the Department of English Literature & Linguistics (DELL) at the Qatar University, Doha.  She lived in Galway for 12 years having taught English literature and philosophy at the National University of Ireland, Galway where she obtained a PhD in Contemporary Irish Theatre and the Greeks.

Dr. Anastasia is planning to bring Qatar University students to Ireland next April and as a perfect introduction to this educational trip she asked her fourth-year undergraduate students in English Literature to choose a poem by Yeats and translate it in Arabic. It was part of their assignments in Modernism where they study Yeats’s work.

They chose “Aedh wishes for the Cloths of Heaven”. The students that took part in translating the poem are from Qatar, Palestine, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Bangladesh.

‘Aedh wishes for the Cloths of Heaven’ by W.B. Yeats

Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
