The Yeats Day Committee is delighted to announce a programme of events celebrating the birthday of the Nobel Prize winning poet, William Butler Yeats on June 13th.
The festival will take place in various venues throughout Sligo from Thursday June 11th to Sunday June 14th. The festival has been extended this year as one of the key events of Yeats2015 – the 150th birthday of WB Yeats, as part of the official decade of commemoration. Key events include the Poet Laureate event at IT Sligo’s Knocknarea Arena on Saturday June 13th at 8.30pm.
The Yeats Day Committee is delighted to welcome Chair Irish Poetry, Paula Meehan, Poet Laureate of England, Carol Ann Duffy, the National Poet of Wales, Gillian Clarke the National Poet of Scotland, Liz Lochead, the London Laureate, Aisling Fahey and Northern Irish Poet , Sinead Morrissey in the presence of President Michael D. Higgin’s, patron of Yeats2015.
Another key event will be the unveiling of ‘Clay and Wattles Made’ – the prestigious architectural competition run by IT Sligo. The winning entry will create a temporary cabin on the Lake Isle of Innisfree for the summer months as a special tribute to the poet’s most well know poem, The Lake Isle of Innisfree.
Yeats Day will celebrate the many aspects of WB Yeats and his family with a multi-disciplinary programme of events which includes visual art, pop up poetry, live art installations, candle-lit salons, drama, street performance, music, family events, the Lily Lolly Craft Fest and much more.
The programme of activities will take place in over 20 venues throughout Sligo town and county over a 4 day period. Other guests will include Edna o’ Brien, Eimear McBride, Ambassador Dan Mulhall, Keith Hopper, and Professor Meg Harper.
Chair of the Yeats Day Committee Senator Susan O’ Keeffe says “Sligo will be the central location in the world his year for the international celebration of WB Yeats’ birthday. The event will honour his great poetry and also offer activities for children and an opportunity to enjoy the Sligo Landscape.”
